Shae could be a good actress. She could be working for that queen of hers to bring Naomi back.

Or to kill Naomi and Buzz.

But the soft longing on Shae’s face as she scrolled through his photos told Von a whole other story. The way her brows furrowed, how her mouth twisted and chin trembled…

This was a woman who loved her friends. She worried for them.

Von had to be vigilant, but everything inside him screamed that this was real, especially when he learned that she was quite knowledgeable about technology and sending coded messages.

Fuck, it made her really sexy.

He was so caught up with thoughts of her that he hadn’t realized the conversation had drifted. The others discussed the Draconia Outcasts’ plight, the group that had gathered on the outskirts of Blue Creek in a makeshift camp.

Those fuckers had tried kidnapping Claire when she’d first mated with Dustin. They’d learned the hard way that it was a very bad idea to mess with a member of the Wolfe pack.

Since then, they’d been working with Tristan, Barbara, Claire, and Dustin, helping all the displaced dragons find homes. Personally, Von wouldn’t have helped anyone who’d kidnapped someone he loved, but Claire had convinced Dustin that the action had been out of desperation and that they all deserved a hand. Dustin, the lovesick fool, did anything his wife wanted and freely funded Claire’s efforts.

“You know Zoila’s mate’s issue? Not being able to shift?” Shae bit her lip, deep in thought. “There are plenty of others out there with the same problem. Lore claims that is why men were kept off the island. Because they couldn’t shift.”

“Really?” Von asked.

Claire nodded. “It’s said that the dragonesses birthed human men who turned on them. They denied their roots, so sure they couldn’t be descendants of dragons. Instead of family loyalty, they hunted down the monsters, trapping them on the island. They made it so the two couldn’t live together.”

“So it became a gender thing, rather than a shifter versus non-shifter thing.” Dustin nodded, finishing the story he’d clearly heard before, though it was a first for Von.

“What are you getting at? There are non-shifting dragons out there who would submit themselves to Zoila’s nanobot tech?”

The other three nodded. “And because of that,” Shae explained. “Zoila might have a following. Non-shifting dragons willing to fight for her. Willing to shelter her while she figures out her next move.”

“Your queen needs to make a move against Zoila. Is she prepared to do that?”

Claire and Shae exchanged a look that made Von feel uneasy. “What? What is it you’re not telling me?”

They each looked down, clearly not wanting to share whatever it was they were hiding. Von looked to his brother instead. “What’s going on?”

Dustin’s eyes shifted from Von to Claire. “You have no reason to leave him out. He’s part of this, whether anyone likes it or not. He’s Shae’s mate.”

“That’s to be determined,” Von said while Shae choked out, “It’s not been made official.”

Dustin sat back in his chair, shaking his head.
